Children’s Charity makes history at the Notting Hill Carnival

Published on 01 September 2009

Action for Children made history this weekend when it became the first children's charity to have its' own float at the Notting Hill Carnival. The world famous carnival kicked off this Sunday with Children's Sunday bringing a splash of the Caribbean to North London. Action for Children as the official charity partner of the Notting Hill Mas Band Association's (NHMBA) took a leading role in the float procession which wound its way through the ordinarily grey streets of the capital. Children from all over the capital joined in the fun wearing carnival costumes that they had made themselves in special carnival workshops put on by the charity in association with NHMBA before the festivities kicked off.

Famous for being the biggest street party in Europe, the Notting Hill Carnival is the second biggest carnival in the world, outdone only by the Rio Carnival itself. More than 200, 000 revellers and dancers flocked to North London to join in the feast of Carribean colour, music and culture on Children's Sunday and figures for the Bank Holiday are expected to be at least double that. Darren Johnson, Operational Director of Children's Services at Action for Children told the BBC that "The Notting Hill Carnival is one of London's best known events so to be able to lead off the procession on Sunday is a huge honour and a great way to mark our 140th birthday this summer.

He added: "Most importantly, it will be an unforgettable experience for all the children involved, many of whom have endured considerable hardship in their young lives. Opportunities like this one don't come around very often for them and I'm sure they will make the most of it!"
