Carnival Queens and Princesses

Published on 18 August 2009

Carnival season is in full swing. Bank Holiday Weekend sees the biggest street festival in the world outside of Rio taking place in Notting Hill, London. Hundreds and thousands of people will don fancy dress and take to the streets of northwest London for dancing and celebration. But is something a little more sedate is more your thing, then on the normally sleepy Isle of Wight, carnival season is also in full throttle with over twenty carnivals taking place over the summer. Towns like Sandown and Shanklin have been partying the long hot days and nights away with their own take on the Notting Hill Carnival, performers have been dancing through the lanes and carnival princesses have been reigning over the proceedings.

This week sees the culmination to the Isle of Wight festivities with what is reputed to be the oldest carnival in England taking place in Ryde. Said to date back to the reign of Queen Victoria, the festival has its origins at the Diamond Jubilee of 1887. The first true Ryde Carnival was held a year later in 1888 and the tradition has continued ever since. Though according to the County Press, these days “the flamboyantly dressed dancers, creative carnival floats and giant costumed characters are more akin to Rio than Ryde.” And this year 121st carnival is going to be no different with more than 2000 performers, dozens of colourful floats and musicians from all over the world winding their way through the streets over the three day event.
